The MYA-PN rating scheme

The MYA-PN or Medway Yachting Association Portsmouth Number rating scheme is to a large extend based around the RYA Portsmouth Yardstick scheme with some adjustment to take into account the general local conditions on the river Medway and to some extend it does give allowance for boats that may have been modified or may have smaller sails then designed. Class boats such as the Sonata or Dragon which comply to the class rules have the official RYA PN handicap assigned while other boats have the general Portsmouth Rules applied to assign a rating with adjustments to make them competitive to the class boats in the normal sailing conditions on the river Medway. If Yachts have an IRC rating when rated under MYA-PN this rating may be considered to compare them to similar models and the MYA-PN rating may be adjusted to take the IRC rating into account.
For a long time this rating was maintained by Bob Scott (member of MYC) and it was designed to be used by other clubs that are part of the Medway Yachting Association even though some people may have referred to it as the MYC rating. In 2005/2006, when Bob Scott decided to hand this task over to somebody else, several failed attempts were made to abandon the Portsmouth scheme and persuade everyone to use the international IRC rating scheme. To try to get all Yachts on the river Medway under the same scheme and to promote more inter-club racing, such as the Maximum Series, a more democratic approach was implemented. To make this scheme a real MYA scheme rather than just one person from one club running it, it was decided that a balanced representation of all clubs wishing to take part in the scheme should coordinate the effort.

Currently all rating requests are discussed by a panel formed by the following people:

  • Roger Griffiths - member of MYC - Chairman
  • Rob Hall - member of MYC and Chatham Maritime Marina - representing Chatham Maritime Marina
  • Hubertus Haniel - member of USC and MYC - representing USC
  • Andy Homer - member of MCC - representing MCC
  • Mike Wallis - member of MYC and Chatham Maritime Marina - representing MYC
  • If you are planning to take part in races which use the MYA-PN scheme or if your club/organisation is not represented in the panel and you are willing to contribute please contact one of the above people via the appropriate clubs or contact Hubertus Haniel using the email at the bottom of this page
